Key benefits of Barium (Ba) testing

  • Barium industrial and water contamination exposure tracking

What is Barium (Ba)?

Barium is an alkaline earth metal found naturally in some groundwater and used in industrial applications including oil and gas drilling, paint pigments, and medical contrast agents. Urinary barium reflects recent exposure. Measured via ICP-MS.

Why is Barium (Ba) important?

Barium exposure primarily comes from drinking water in regions with naturally elevated barium levels, or from occupational industrial contact. Barium compounds can affect the cardiovascular system and muscles at elevated exposures. Water quality monitoring may be relevant for members with elevated levels.

What insights will I get?

Your barium level may indicate recent exposure from drinking water, industrial environments, or medical procedures involving barium contrast. Elevated levels may prompt water quality testing if well or municipal water is a potential source.

Method: ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) with creatinine normalization by Jaffe Reaction (CLIA 14D0646470); not cleared or approved by the FDA. Results in µg/g creatinine; reference intervals based on NHANES population data under non-provoked conditions. Not a stand-alone diagnosis; should be interpreted in clinical context.
