Gliotoxin

Gliotoxin is a highly bioactive mycotoxin produced primarily by Aspergillus fumigatus, commonly found in water-damaged buildings behind wallpaper, beneath flooring, and inside HVAC systems.

Key benefits of Gliotoxin (GTX) testing

  • Aspergillus fumigatus gliotoxin exposure tracking
  • immune system challenge and respiratory mold exposure assessment

What is Gliotoxin (GTX)?

Gliotoxin is a mycotoxin produced primarily by Aspergillus fumigatus - a common airborne mold. It has immunosuppressive properties and may be relevant for respiratory exposures or fungal infection contexts. Detected in urine via LC-MS/MS.

Why is Gliotoxin (GTX) important?

Aspergillus fumigatus is one of the most common environmental molds and a leading cause of invasive fungal infection in immunocompromised individuals (per CDC). Gliotoxin production is an A. fumigatus virulence factor. Urinary gliotoxin may reflect inhalation or dietary A. fumigatus exposure.

What insights will I get?

Your gliotoxin level may reflect inhalation of A. fumigatus spores from indoor or outdoor environments, or dietary sources. Discuss elevated levels with your care team, particularly if you have respiratory symptoms, asthma, or immune concerns - an environmental mold assessment may be appropriate.

Method: LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry) measuring free (unconjugated) mycotoxins in urine (CLIA 17D0919496); not cleared or approved by the FDA. Results in ng/g creatinine. Not a stand-alone diagnosis; should be interpreted in clinical context.
