Why I joined Superpower

A letter on design as a way to help, two years as Superpower's client, and building the proactive version of care.

I love beauty and I love helping people. Design is the one medium that lets me do both. My interest in creative spaces started when I taught myself to draw off YouTube as a kid, and it has since grown into working closely with engineers and getting properly into the code as well. Beauty exists everywhere, so it doesn't matter to me which medium I use to create it. I have grown the most from being somewhere unfamiliar and staying curious about how and why things worked.

Three years ago I was at an agency called Daybreak, where Superpower was my client. I was the primary product designer there for the better part of two years, working closely with the founders. The habits I learned from that time stuck without me really trying: whole foods, moving my body more, better clothing and products at home. As a result, I lost fifteen pounds, cleared horrible eczema, and never once felt like I was limiting my life.

I care that people are healthy because everyone deserves to feel good and live life to the fullest. Healthy people make better decisions, stay more optimistic, and are kinder to each other. I want to help people be proactive about their health rather than reactive to health problems. I am from Canada, where healthcare is free but the wait is long enough that I have sat out plenty of symptoms until they faded and the appointment stopped mattering. Designing at Superpower is my way of helping someone else feel better and catch problems sooner.

Outside of work I love living a simple lifestyle. I find joy in taking walks, lounging in the sun at home, and trying fun food combos. My current favorite is miso paste, butter, and honey in my coffee. It has a deep caramel flavor. And as much of a homebody as I am, I also enjoy going on solo outings. I get very inspired meeting new people and hearing their life stories.
